The GNIB = The Garda National Immigration Bureau, that is the Immigration division of the Irish Gardai.

EEA States = States within the European Economic Area, including the 27 Member States of the EU plus EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway

EU Treaty Rights = The legal rights EEA nationals derive from EU Treaty Law, generally referred to in respect of Free Movement Rights.

The Court of Justice = The European Court of Justice

Documented/Undocumented = status of residence permission and refers to those who are resident with or without lawful permission

Reckonable residence = periods of residence in the State that are counted towards Naturalization

Regular/Irregular = status of residence permission and refers to those who are resident with or without lawful permission

Naturalization = the process by which a person of a nationality other than Irish can acquire Irish citizenship

Timed Out Student = a student whose permission to remain in the State has expired

Permission to Remain = lawful permission to reside in the State issued to a Non national by either the Minister for Justice and Equality, or the GNIB acting on the Minister’s behalf. Permission to remain will be evidenced in the form of an endorsement in a passport confirming the conditions and period of time for which the recipient is granted a right to reside in the State.

The Directive = Directive 2004/38/EC, on the right of citizens of the Union and their family members to move and reside freely in the territory of the Member States

The Regulations = European Communities (Free Movement of Persons) (No.2) Regulations 2006

ACCA = Association of Chartered Certified Accountants

WCATT = Without Condition As To Time, indefinite permission to remain in the State

Labour Market = the labour force, and the systems of regulation of the labour force within the jurisdiction of the EU. The term is used primarily in relation to the free movement of workers.

Civil Partnership = a statutory civil partnership registration scheme for same-sex couples, introduced on 1st January 2011

De Facto Relationship = the status of a couple who are in a durable and attestable relationship for a period of at least two years

HLTR = Humanitarian Leave to Remain, permission to reside in the State on humanitarian grounds
